SNAKE BITE FIRST AID TREATMENT

Call Emergency Services (000)

  1. Ensure the danger is gone
  2. Lay the victim down, reassure them, and call 000 (Emergency services)
  3. Use the speaker on your phone if possible
  4. Only move the victim if there’s further danger

Apply a firm bandage over the bite site

Apply a firm pressure bandage (10–15cm wide) to the bite site immediately. Use a second bandage, starting just above the fingers or toes, and wrap up to the torso. If unavailable, use clothing. Keep it firm but don’t restrict blood flow. After applying the bandage, mark the bite location.

For a bite on the torso, securely wrap a bandage around the area, ensuring consistent pressure over and around the bite site.

Do NOT CLEAN OR wash the bite site

Do not wash the bite, as the venom can help identify the snake at the hospital. Cleaning the area won’t aid recovery and may make treatment more difficult.

Avoid cutting the bite or using a tourniquet

Venom spreads through the lymphatic system beneath the skin. Cutting the bite or using a tourniquet to restrict blood flow can cause further harm.
